Please be informed that on June 7th of this year, the DOF introduced a new standard (PROY NOM – 087 – SCT – 2 – 2017) created to regulate the amount of time that an operator can drive a cargo unit, with the aim of reducing as much as possible the incidence of accidents during operations. This rule is mandatory for all carriers and their ancillary services in any type of unit that transit in roads and bridges of federal jurisdiction of the Mexican Republic.

Due to this rule, in all operations and without exception, if the operation time exceeds 9 hours a day, the carriers will have to assign a double operator with an additional charge to the contracted service, having always in mind that the purpose of this standard is safety for the operators, units and merchandise.

The main guidelines of this standard are as follows:

  1. Every driver should take a 30-minute break for every 5 hours of driving.
  2. In no case pause periods shall be cumulative
  3. The driver must carry the Service Hours Log and display it to the competent authority when required
  4. In the freight transport, if the trip implies a maximum driving time of 14 hrs. the operator must rest for not less than 8 continuous hrs., taking also the pauses mentioned at the first point

Said rule will enter into force 60 days after its publication in the DOF. The above information so you can program your next terrestrial operations according to this new rule.
